No snow in Wanaka today, but we heard that the weather was good up the hill, so after Spook had cleaned out his poo tank, we headed up there. Sure enough, the snow that had got everyone excited yesterday was just out of the city limits. Having practiced at work, Spook pulled into the carpark at the bottom of the hill and wheeched his chains on with a dexterity that left the cold fingered masses staring as they puzzled over balls of mangled metal. No sweat. As we came round the corner near the top of the mountain road, the empty ski slopes beckoned - maybe the fear of snow chains had put everyone else off! Beautiful conditions and quiet as. I seem to be good for about 4 runs and then I start falling over again as my legs weaken. I ride with such lack of style, grace and any evidence of past experience that it is quite exhausting. Spook fared much better - no surprises there.
We gave lifts home to 3 folk; one from London, one from Brighton, and one from Aviemore.
Chaos ensued at home as Finn, John and Sam couldn't quite get their plans together and I got into trouble from Spook for not having a clear picture of the night ahead. Between the boys making plans that mothers didn't know about, and prior plans being cancelled, it was confusing. I felt that my chaotic nature and role as a mother, coped much better than Spook, who would have been happier cleaning out another poo tank.
I bought tickets for tomorrow nights film festival and for Monday too. Thought it would be good to see how it compared with our own festival in Fort William. Tomorrows finishes at 7pm and we are going round to Shannon and Steve's for a drink by their very large fireplace. The snow has fallen at Wanaka level tonight and Meg and I went for a walk in the white silence. It has a very Christmassy feel about it and one can't help wondering why they put all those lights round the big tree in town in mid summer, when it would look wonderful now.
As the children at home start their summer holidays, we start our 2 week winter break.
grateful for:
snow.
